WHAT IS PREMIUM COCONUT SOY WAX?

Coconut oil is obtained via a natural process. As such, coconut wax burns slow and clean, unlike parafin wax which released particled (chemicals) in the air. Wick'ed Candle & Co. only uses a premium coconut soy wax.

ARE SCENTED CANDLES HARMFUL TO YOUR HEALTH?  DOES THE TYPE OF WAX MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

ABSOLUTELY! LET’S LOOK AT THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF WAX.

The top 4 wax choices on the market are; Paraffin, Soy, Beeswax and Coconut. Of these four, Coconut wax is the most organic and ideal for candles. Here are the differences between these top four waxes and why Coconut wax is not only the best for candle making but also for your health!

In order by least favorable to most favorable:

Paraffin:

This is the most cost-effective material for candle making and as such, candles made with paraffin are the cheapest candles on the market, making it attractive to the buyer. However, paraffin wax is a by-product of gasoline. Yes, GASOLINE! Does that sound healthy to you?

Stanford University conducted a study in 2016, titled “Candles Causing Cancer”. In the document submitted by Mariah Lee, on December 17, 2017 she stated “Paraffin is a waxy ingredient derived from petroleum. Candles made from the substance are suspected to give off toxic chemicals, like toluene and benzene. [1] Toluene and benzene are known to be carcinogens (cancer causing agents). Toluene specifically induces DNA strand break downs which affect the central nervous system.”

Soy:

Soy wax has become a popular choice for many companies, mostly because it is a better choice than paraffin and it is cost efficient, due to the soybean industry lead by the agricultural giant, Bayer. Many companies claim that their soy wax products are natural, however Non-GMO soy wax is nonexistent. In addition, soy contains pesticide and fertilizer additives. As per FDA, in 2018, GMO soybeans made up 94% of all soybeans planted. Inhaling pesticides, herbicides and fertilizer chemicals was not for me. Unless the companies are purchasing wax made from organic soybeans (the 6%), it is far from natural.

Palm:

Nothing really to say on the health effects of burning Palm wax or the scent throw etc. It’s really all about sustainability and the impact to the environment. If you respect and are conscious about the impact to our environment, then you should read the next few lines and we’ll move on to the next wax!

Indonesia has been logging their forest since 1967 which covered 2000 square kilometers of forestry. By the year 2000, they’ve increased their cultivation area to 30,000 square kilometers! Specifically for the production of palm oil and it hasn’t leveled off. Why, because all the big purchasers of Palm oil continues to maintain the demand! Well, we at Wicked Candle & Co. refuse to contribute to the severe loss of forestry and the devastation of wildlife!

Bees Wax:

Basically, bees wax is highly sustainable, however there are two distinct challenges. 1) Some beehives are closely located to farmers fields, which could potentially come into contact with some of those pesticides and herbicides mentioned in the Soy section above! 2) Beeswax smells like, well, beeswax! Unfortunately, any scents added to candles made with beeswax will conflict and as a result, the scents are negatively impacted. Last but not least, not all beeswax is ethically sourced.

Coconut:

Coconut wax is derived from high-melt coconut oil, from Coconuts. This wax is entirely organic and renewable material, which guarantees sustainable ecological preservation. Coconut candles burn the cleanest, with near zero soot! They burn very slow and have superior scent throw. Why has this wax been overlooked by the candle industry? The cost! Coconut Soy Wax is made with coconuts and organic soy. We at Wicked Candle & Co. spare no costs to ensure that our candles are made from the most natural, renewable source that does not impact our environment and our health!

And the best part is, that all of our products are priced competitively with most soy wax candles on the market.

DOES COCONUT SOY WAX SMELL LIKE COCONUTS?

I get asked this question all the time and it was my first question when I started my candle making journey. The refining process removes the coconut scent resulting in a scentless wax.
